19. You can fish there

Elizabeth Kaledin notes that “few people know that fishing is permitted in Central Park and that the Harlem Meer is the best place to fish.” Between April and October you can get a free fishing pole with your ID from the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center and start snagging carp, catfish, bass, pumpkinseed, chain pickerel, and black crappie to your hearts content. And then throw them back because it’s catch-and-release.

The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art (In 1947, Tibetan Buddhist culture aficionado Jacques Marchais opened to the public two stone buildings on a Staten Island hillside, which house her collection of Tibetan art. The tiny museum is the only Himalayan-temple-style building in the United States and is surrounded by meditation gardens. It contains a striking Buddhist altar and the largest collection of Tibetan art in the West, including religious objects, bronzes and paintings. Every October, the museum hosts a Tibetan festival. Try tai chi and meditation sessions. ),  Staten Island Ferry,  year-round at the indoor Staten Island Skating Pavilion , Put on your sneakers and go hiking in High Rock Park—there are six trails to choose from of varying skill levels, If you're up for a challenge, opt for High Rock Park's Yellow Trail, which leads to the 260-foot Moses' Mountain, a man-made hill with awesome panoramic views. Inside a graffiti-tagged door and up a FLIGHT of stairs you’ll get to this Filipino/Thai fusion spot from whence Chef King Phojanakong slings flavor bombs like deep-fried pork belly lechon kawali, drunken spicy shrimp finished with sake, kalamnsi, and Thai chilies, and saffron rice loaded with chicken, sausage, shrimp, and mussels.

Nintendo  Midtown W 10 Rockefeller Plaza, 48th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues; have games to try out and cool suvenier stuff of pokemon and other Nintendo avatars.
Manhattan

DUMBO: has Jane's Carousel which is like 1$ per ride and its very near a very large river.  A good place to just relax and there is a pizza restaurant Grimaldi's and Lombardi's.  Don't come in like two o'clock cuz lol, the line is freaking long.  Not too sure if its good for hangouts, but good for a meditating calm self-indulgence.
Manhattan

Lego Store : Free, Pieces that you can build for fun NOT FREE, Awesome impressive creations to see.  Hmm. well a hangout ehhh, but for a quick detour sure; awaken the creativity!
Manhattan

New Museum : a museum in Soho that potrays the arts of modern artists.
Students : $10
Adults : $15
Those under 18 Yrs : FREE with a condition that one of the group has to pay the student price( if ur still one) or the adult price (if you're an adult)
Soho

Luma Festival - At Binghamton City (the first friday when school starts) There are animations clips shown on buildings to demonstrate and vendors and art galleries!  The vendors tend to stay on one street and this event is very popular where many come to visit!

Toys R Us (Times Square): This place is right near the big ball of the New Year's, and it is the biggest of all of the toys r us stores.  It contains a ferris wheel, the big T-rex, the Barbie House and multiple great cartoons and other playthings in many of its floors!  It also contains the uniqee beanie flavors that are shown in the Harry
1514 Broadway at 44th Street

Kinokuniya Bookstore:  This interesting place is filled with anime-related things which u can see on the 2nd floor.  there are 3 floors;  the first is just filled with books, 2nd filled with anime and has a small cute cafe. The third i still havent checked out unfortunately.  The manga and anime there are written in japanese only so if u can read it dont bother.  but u can get anime wallpaper, shirts, bags, and figurines that would be hard to find elsewhere.  Oh n besides the cafe, there really isnt chairs for you to sit so beware of dat too.  Its across Bryant Park, Next to a bank.
Manhattan

Bay Plaza: Recommended for a small group as well!!
The Bay Plaza Mall: pretty good for the Bronx, they have stores like Express, Victoria Secret, H&M, Forever 21, etc; they also have Olive Garden inside : which has a very good deal of dinner for two for $25: this package consists of a large salad or two small appetizing soups, a bread stick per person, a surprisingly filling entree, and dessert!
*there's also an Apple Bee's and a Xin Hi Chinese Buffet (the buffet-around $15/person with good food) close by it.

AMC Theater: if you watch a movie that is BEFORE 12:00 PM, then the prices for movies are A LOT CHEAPER: AROUND $7!!!!

BROOKLYN HANGOUT??
kAI FENG FU, BA XUYEN, AND SUNSET PARK!!!

West 4th Station (Washington Heights): Recommended for a small group like up  to 5 people.
Papaya Dog: dis place is incredibly cheap, but the food dat i had seemed mediocre at best i guess.  The fries were all limpy spaghetti like, n the eggs were overseasoned with the blackpepper n salt.  ok, mayb the seasonin wuz mi fault but still dat wuz a lot.  There are like no chairs but a couple of tall tables n the cooks r pretty cool.  But i wouldn't really come back unless i'm pretty close to broke by lik 3 dollars lol.  N if i do come back, then i'll b more careful with how i tell them how to season mi food.

Washington Square Park: a small park to relax and enjoy the attractions that happening on dat day especially from what I know on Saturdays: there are musical performances and a lot of benches.

Chess Forum: quiet place to play chess; When the weather won't let you hustle tourists at the boards in Washington Square Park, for $5 per hour perfect your strategy at this always-open spot, which feels more like a private club for checkmate-minded individuals than a hobby store. Bring your favorite competitor or play against one of the store's ready-made opponents: the VCS attendants. If you find yourself in a Maroczy Bind, spend $1 for a bit of liquid strategy in the form of coffee, hot chocolate, tea or soda, or take a break at one of the store's nonchess tables, which accommodate backgammon, Go, cards or cribbage matches.

The UnCommons: a small place that has board games and is a small café.

Mamoun's Falafel Restarurant

Strand Bookstore: the place is freaking huge!  This place is not really good for groups more than four cuz the place is crowded with books that are legendary and historic! Only for booklovers plz!!  There are three floors, and besides books, they have so awesome tourist shops; thank goodness I was broke or I would have been broke by then ha!  Sadly, there isn't really room to sit down and read a good book; cry.  If you like to stand, yet be surrounded by rare and classical books then dis store is 4 u!!  The place has 3 Floors.

Hang out spot also includes Washington Square Park (a small park that has artistic and musical performances), The UnCommons (a $5 board game all day cafe), the Village Chess Shop (an antique quiet chess shop that allows you to play chess). Also, called Chess Forum. Also, Pie by the Pound is there ( a place to play board games, read, and eat pizza). *I have not been to the last 3 places.

Chinatown, Manhattan:

Ya Ya Tea Garden: a café where you can get good cheap bubble tea and not only that! You can buy sweets and snacks or hang out there!  Think it's only a café?  Well, think again!  You can also order different types of onigiris(Japanese rice balls) and other dishes that serve rice with them!  Trust me, it's awesome but warning: it seems that the place is quite surprisingly popular in an isolated place so if there are no seats; watch out.
(51 Chrystie St New York, NY 10002; 10 AM - 9 PM)

Nom Wah Tea Parlor:  a nice and classy medium sized place that is at an alley which I recommend obviously to go during the day time!  Furthermore, its conveniently right next to the Taiwanese Pork Chop House!  The Nom Wah Tea Parlor is recognizable and I agree serves good and delicious food; the minute you put your mouth on them, it tastes magnificent!  Even though the menu is majorly dim sum which they are known for and oddly enough, not all of them are dim sum, there are also some pretty decent large dishes that are around $9-$13.  Even their dim sum section; which seems just like appetizers to me; are pretty good and most of them are around $4-$5! However, I just have to warn you that they are appetizers; they are good but small on a platter or something similar to that!  Near the Big Court by the way!

Prosperity Dumpling: a very tiny hole in the wall yet GIVES DELICIOUS AWESOMENESS not only in it's dumplings and its sesame pancakes!!! All hail, Prosperity Dumpling; Warning: place is very small and can be a bit unsanitary looking but its worth buying food there!  These people dont play around, and besides who doesn't love cheap food: 4 fried dumplings for a $1 and a regular sesame pancake for a $1?  I just have to say God has given birth to this blessing!
  • (46 Eldridge Stb/t Canal St & Hester St
    Lower East Side, Chinatown)

Taiwanese Pork Chop House: a roomy place that is near the shrine and bridge of chinatown lol, it's in a curvy path.  The food wuz pretty good and the size was pretty good.  The price ranges from $5-$6.  They offer also tea and water.  I really liked the taste of the food and the people were pretty sweet :D.  I would love to go back.  It's kinda difficult to find though lol. (CLOSED TUESdays)
Chinatown, NYC

Maid Cafe NY: OMG, i LOVED THE PLACE.  The maids were so nice.  Their food wuz pretty decent; loved their gyudon, and curry.  I wished they added more than one scoop on mi icecream float though. And their cake had a buttery aftertaste.  The place looks really cute and nice and they also have a shop counter that has anime things <3  its pretty expensive though; RANGE: $7-$42.

Chinatown Fair : 8 Mott St, NYC, NY 10013 ; A place that though may small, it's a pretty great place to let off some steam and play games that you would see in an arcade like table ice hockey, basketball, dance revolutions, mortal kombat, racing, doll grappling machines, and the prize table.
It's also pretty cheap, and though its crowded, its not too crowded.  There are no tables and chairs so prepare to stand for a long time but enjoy.  It's fun to bring a few friends over.
Sun-Thurs : 11 AM TO MIDNIGHT
Fri & Sat : 11 AM TO 2 AM

Elizabeth - (Center Gift Shops)/ (Center Mall): a gift shop that also near the shrine, bank, and bridge.  Inside there's an escalator.  When u go down, there's a lot of stuff, but the one place that made me overjoyed wuz the place filled with anime belongings.  Most of the stuff range from $5-$40 so bring money!

Great NY Noodletown = Sanitation - A
Most things below $10 but above $5
Recommended :

Roast Pork and Duck on Rice  $5.50

We're partial to Great New York Noodletown's roast baby pig, but the "Roast Pork and Duck on Rice" is a more affordable plate. The duck is salty and a little gamey, a little bony, and more than a little greasy. The roast pork is moist and lightly sweet, without the addictive crisp skin of the baby pig. Still, served over rice with a bit of cabbage, it's quite a filling meal (or two lighter lunches) for $5.50.

Cafe EdisonTheater goers, performers and business folk know that there's a stately coffee shop (dubbed the Polish Tea Room) tucked inside the venerable, art deco Hotel Edison, even if it is hidden behind a nondescript entrance. In addition to the usual American diner staples, the ornate former ballroom offers up Eastern European Jewish comfort food specialties like standout soups, blintzes and matzo brei. The secrets to its success? A bustling backdrop, low prices and a killer matzoh ball soup. Don't forget to bring cash as they don't accept plastic. 228 West 47th St., 212-354-0368, no website
Sake Bar HagiYou'll feel like you're entering a Tokyo-styled speakeasy when you descend the stairs to this cozy underground izakaya, which is easy-to-miss with its hidden locale beneath another Japanese restaurant. Inside, small plates like sizzling yakitori skewers, crispy tempuras and noodles come cheap enough that you'll want to order multiple rounds to sample and share. There are also more adventurous choices like chicken gizzard and octopus balls, which seem like a better idea after a couple of $12 pitchers of Sapporo. It's easy to see why this place endures -- it's packed night after night. You'll have to write your name on a list as you enter and wait for a call when your table's ready. It's a good chance to enjoy the Times Square scenery, just don't wander too far -- they ask you to return within five minutes. 152 W. 49th St., 212-764-8549, sakebarhagi.com

ENTER through the side door on Morton and walk through the garden to gain access to this charming spot, hidden away from its Hudson St storefront, and reap the benefits of your adventurous nature via dishes like grilled leg of lamb and pan-seared gnocchi.

Le Train Bleu - Midtown

Secreted away beyond aisles and displays of whatever it is they sell at a Bloomingdales (doilies probably), LTB is modeled after an old-school French train car and serves fare to MATCH, like croque monsieur, steak frites, and a burger topped with bleu cheese.

Cult-Worthy Noodles and Dumplings at Lam Zhou Handmade Noodles
You will very likely wander past this hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Chinatown, but don’t be fooled. Despite its rather industrial (to put it kindly) setting, this shop turns out some of the best dumplings and noodles in town. Plus, you get to watch the magical process of hand-pulled noodles being made, with one piece of dough getting stretched and viciously slapped against the table until it becomes a pile of perfectly uniform, gorgeous noodles. It’s not a place to linger, but if you’re looking for some of the best food in Chinatown - with dirt-cheap prices - you’ve hit the jackpot here.

  • Hidden Artisanal Cocktails at Lovers of Today
It’s a good thing this speakeasy-style bar - located in a hard-to-find basement just under Niagara in the East Village - is under the radar: its appeal comes from both its laid-back attitude and pint-sized charm (if you have trouble finding it look for the tykes painted on the wall outside the entrance). Escape the street-level madness and descend into a cocktail lover’s dream, where you can order unexpectedly excellent drinks (all made with housemade liqueurs) that have kitschy names like Waterloo Sunset and Satellite of Love. The über-cool kids may be going farther down the staircase to Cabin Down Below, but this subterranean space is this buildng’s true destinatoin.

  • Cauliflower Pizza at Stella 34 Trattoria
Head up the elevator right at the Herald Square entrance of Macy’s to the sixth floor to find, astonishingly, a spacious, luxe restaurant that serves inventive Italian. While the pasta and entrees are all tasty, don't miss the Cavolfiori: a sauceless pizza made with a base of incredibly creamy cauliflower puree, Meyer lemon, roasted cauliflower and a sprinkling of crispy breadcrumbs. It’s super light (especially thanks to the thin, airy crust, courtesy of the massive, screamingly hot wood-burning ovens), hits all the right spots and will be something you find yourself randomly craving in the middle of the night.

  • Great, Non-Sceney Chinese at Yunnan Kitchen
For those looking to avoid Han Dynasty and Mission Chinese’s crowds, Yunnan Kitchen is an amazing choice. Like its counterparts, it’s a modern, family-style restaurant, but serves flavorful, refined cuisine that’s liberally sprinkled with tongue-tingling Yunnan spices. If you’re looking to bring a group for authentic, unique Chinese, this is the place.
    79 Clinton St.; 212-253-2527
  • Beer Expertise at Cafe D'Alsace
Attention brew snobs: Perhaps you didn’t know, but Cafe D'Alsace in the Upper East Side has their own beer sommelier. This means you get expert recommendations of countless beers that are, wonderfully, paired with the restaurant’s French fare. (But wine lovers shouldn’t fret - there's a fine selection of vino too.)
    1695 Second Ave.; 212-722-5133
  • Low-Key Italian at Gnocco
There’s nothing better than tucking into simple, delicious Italian fare outside on a gorgeous patio, right? This is the case over at Gnocco, where the food is upscale yet unpretentious and hits all the right notes. Think decadent pizzas, fabulous wines and to-die-for desserts. A helpful hint: The place is named after a snack made of puffed, fried dough served with Italian meats, so you definitely don’t want to pass it up.
Also great: Le Barricou over in Williamsburg has some stellar (and decently priced) pastas in a comfy setting.

  • Hidden Cocktails at Bar Centrale
Find the unmarked brownstone over on bustling Restaurant Row (aka West 46th Street between Eighth and Ninth) and get treated to incredible cocktails. It’s definitely got a velvety, VIP feel with prices to match, so your best bet is to pop in early and order some small plates while downing your drinks.
    324 W. 46th St.; 212-581-3130
  • Sandwiches at City Sandwich
This tiny hole-in-the-wall in Hell’s Kitchen makes an amazing 'wich with their just-out-of-the-oven buns made with Portuguese pao de agua flour, topped with the freshest ingredients from purveyors around the city. We love their Portuguese-Italian mash-ups, the fact that chef Michael Guerrieri is so friendly and that they have some of the best panna cotta in the city. A heads up: Since it’s so small, it’s best for takeout or delivery.
    649 Ninth Ave.; 646-684-3943
  • Incredible Bibimbap - in Midtown - at Ambrosia
Head to the rather crazed-looking deli on 45th Street and beeline straight for the Korean counter in the back. There, you’ll find bibimbap, a Korean hodgepodge of rice, meat (get the bulgogi), pickled vegetable deliciousness, and a fried egg. Mix it all together with their tangy, spicy red sauce and you’ll become completely addicted, trust us. Plus, you get a free miso soup! All this clocks in around $10, and it’s definitely enough for two people.

Learn to Swim
The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation offers free summer swimming lessons for children as young as 18 months through adulthood at public pools. There are three separate summer sessions: Monday, July 7-Tuesday, July 22; Wednesday, July 23-Thursday, August 7; and Monday, August 11-Friday, August 22. In addition, children ages 6 to 18 who can swim 50 meters in reasonably good form can join free swim teams.
How to register: The Parks Department will hold an online lottery starting June 13. You can find additional details in our in-depth free swim lessons post.

Downtown Boathouse at the newly renovated Pier 26 offers kayaking on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9am to 6pm, and select weekday evenings from 5 to 7pm in July and August.
Brooklyn Bridge Boathouse offers kayaking every Saturday from 10am to 3pm and Thursday from 5:30 to 6:45pm from June 7 to August 31 in Brooklyn Bridge Park between Piers 1 and 2.

Catch-and-Release Fishing in Central Park
The Harlem Meer, located at the northeast corner of the park, is probably the best spot to fish with kids in the city. The lake is stocked with a wide variety of fish, including golden shiner, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, bluegill sunfish, carp and chain pickerel. Bamboo fishing poles are available free of charge (you must leave a valid picture I.D.) from mid-April through mid-October at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, located on the north shore of the Harlem Meer at 110th Street between Lenox and Fifth Avenues.

Big Apple Games
Big Apple Games takes place indoors not outside, but these activities are worth knowing about: The Public Schools Athletic League sponsors this program, which runs Monday, July 7 to Thursday, August 7. From Monday-Thursday, 1-5pm and 6-9pm, students in ninth to 12th grades can hit the Afternoon & Evening Teen Recreational Centers for wrestling, volleyball, basketball, softball, floor hockey, team handball, gymnastics, ultimate Frisbee, arts and crafts, and swimming lessons. The Junior High School Program for students in fourth to eighth grades is open 9am-3pm on weekdays, and offers a variety of activities including arts and crafts, game room fun and sports. All sites are staffed with licensed teachers and school safety officers.
Visit the website for a list of locations and schedule.
How to register: Kids can show up at the location of their choice on the days they want. Call 718-707-4208 for more info.
